background and objective: epilepsy is a long-lasting central nervous system disorder that is accompany with spontaneous seizures and insufficiency in learning and memory. now drug treatment is the most common therapy but some patients do not research to suitable control of their seizures with current drugs. hence, new treatment is needed to help those patients that are unaffected to existing drugs. in present study, we evaluate the protective effect of pretreatment with salvianolic acid b in experimental model of temporal lobe epilepsy in male rats. materials & methods: in the present study, the effect of intraperitoneal administration of salvianolic acid b (10 mg/kg) on induced seizures and learning and memory impairment induced by intrahippocampal injection of kainic acid (ka, 4 mg) were assessed in rats. results: obtained data showed that the epileptic rats display kainic acid-induced seizures. on the other hand, in epileptic rats, spontaneous alternation score in y maze tasks lowered (p

The Effect of Alpha-Lipoic Acid on Learning and Memory Deficit in a Rat Model of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

Introduction: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder in which patients experience spontaneous recurrent seizures and deficiency in learning and memory. Although the most commonly recommended therapy is drug treatment, some patients do not achieve adequate control of their seizures on existing drugs. New medications with novel mechanisms of action are needed to help those patients whose sei...

Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor ameliorates status epilepticus seizures and cognitive disturbances in a rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy

Background and Objective: In temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), recurrent seizures accompany with cognitive deficit. In some patients, the current medications cannot provide satisfactory control of seizures, therefore new drugs that act through different mechanisms are required. In the present study, the useful effect of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor was evaluated in experimental model of tempora...

The Effect of Withania somnifera Alcoholic Extract on Learning and Memory Disturbance in a Model of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy in the Rat

Background and Objective: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) usually leads to memory deficit. In this study, we tried to assess the effect of Withania somnifera extract on the impaired learning and memory in the intrahippocampal kainate model of TLE in the rat. Materials & Methods: Male rats (n=32) were divided into sham, extract+sham, kainite, and kainite+extract. For induction of epilepsy, unilate...

The protective effect of carvacrol on kainic acid-induced model of temporal lobe epilepsy in male rat

Background and Objective: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a chronic neurological disorder with spontaneous recurrent seizures and abnormal intracranial waves. Since the role of oxidative stress in the occurrence of epilepsy is inevitable, it seems that the use of antioxidants can prevent some of the complications resulting from this disease. This study was designed to assess the protective effe...
